Enrolment and Admissions

IEA schools employ an inclusive enrolment policy which means that its schools will admit any student who meets the enrolment requirements. IEA schools are open to Papua New Guinea and PNG resident students.

Important notes on students transferring from different school systems.

Families wanting to transfer from other schools, especially from outside PNG are asked to take careful note of the School Admission section below.

To avoid disappointment or confusion it is important for parents to contact the IEA school in advance to confirm availability of places and the school's enrolment procedures. It is much better to have the placement confirmed before transferring or relocating to PNG.

IEA School Admissions

IEA School Year

The IEA school year calendar is one that which is common in the Southern hemisphere, e.g. Australia, New Zealand and Southern Africa, in which the school year begins in late January and ends in early December. The school year is divided into four terms with a break in-between each term. The terms are 9 or 10 weeks long.

The IEA's grade structure is based on the PNG education system and is most similar to school systems in Australia.

Student Enrollment

Students can enroll in IEA schools in the appropriate grade/year level for their age and prior school experience. Enrolment procedures are set by the school based on the IEA policy.

IEA schools will accept students with some basic entry requirements:

That school fees are paid in advance and are always up-to-date.
That the school has an available space for the child.
That the parents and the student abide by the school's rules and policies.
That the student's attendance record meets the PNG Education Department requirements.
That the school has the facilities, staff and resources to meet the educational, social, emotional, health and behavioural needs of the child.

In addition, the following will be required:

Fully completed enrolment form.
Proof of identity copy for the child, e.g., passport, ID, birth certificate, in colour.
The school may require an interview and/or academic assessment to assist in admission and class placement.
Transfer certificates and/or records from previous schools will be required.
Reports and advice on any specific educational, health or other special care requirements prior to enrolment.

Changes in any of the above must be notified to the school immediately. This applies especially to parent contact details.

Student Transfers

The IEA provides transfer certificates for use when students move between IEA Schools, and optionally when children move to non-IEA schools within or outside Papua New Guinea.

The original transfer certificate should be given to the parent or guardian and a copy retained for record purposes. The transfer certificate should be supplied on request to the parent of a pupil who is leaving a school, provided all the conditions of transfer have been met.

No Transfer or other Certificate or Report should be issued where a pupil has not cleared all debts and fees, including items on hire or loan, to the school without the approval of the School Board.

Where a waiting list operates a pupil seeking a genuine transfer between IEA Schools has priority i.e., the pupil is placed at the top of the waiting list of the school to which he or she wishes to transfer.

The School Board must approve a decision to refuse the enrolment of a pupil wishing to transfer into a school.

Student Class Assignment

As the IEA school year commences in January, this may be a different from the school that students are transferring from, or to.

It is not always possible to equate grade or year levels between different school systems. For example:

As it can be seen the IEA aligns directly with NSW, Australia, as that is the system that the IEA was originally founded upon.

Within some national school systems there may be variations between its states and provinces.

Even amongst systems with the same school year (September to July), such as England and USA, the grade/year names are not always equivalent.

Depending upon the time of year, a student may have just started or finished a grade/year but be in the middle of a school year in another system.

This means that students transferring to the IEA may be placed in a class that has a number different from their current grade/year. This does not mean that child will be missing out academically as the IEA curriculum is based on the learning needs of the child and not on age or grade level alone.

The school will always try to accommodate a parental request on educational and social grounds, but this may not always be possible.

The final decision on the class placement lies with the principal of the school.

IEA Schools Age and Grade Levels

Pre School

Primary School P-G6 or G8

A child must be five years old by the 31st of March in the year of commencement to be eligible for primary school enrolment.

The first year of primary school is Prep, this is equivalent to Reception or Foundation in other school systems.

Following Prep students move to Grade One and so on until Grade Eight in most IEA schools.

IEA schools use the IEA Curriculum from Prep to Garde 8.
