Background
Kamarau International
School is a newly established school and the smallest
IEA School in the
country. It opened its doors for the first time in
May 2004 at the request of some committed parents.
Kamarau
International School is wholly owned and operated by
the International Education Agency of Papua New Guinea
(IEA). The International school system in Papua New
Guinea operates independently from the country’s
Government School system. Each International School
operates as a non-profit organisation, under the
auspices
of a parent company, the International Education Agency
(IEA). The IEA is a non-government body, which is
responsible
to the Department of Education through a government
body, the National Education Board.
Location
The school
is situated on Buka Island in the Bougainville Region
of Papua New Guinea. It is
located at ‘Katsinkuri’ in the outskirts
of Buka town. The school is a rented building comprising
one classroom, an office, all fully air-conditioned
with a teacher’s accommodation upstairs.
Staff and Students
Kamarau International
School has a one multigrade class of 20 children
with one teaching
principal.
The children’s ages range from 21 month old toddler
to 17. The students come from Buka Island and other
parts
of Bougainville.
Motto: Learning Through Peace
Our roles and responsibilities are carried
out only through peaceful means. To have a happy school,
we must first of all have peace and our daily practices
must always reflect peace.
Mission of Kamarau
International School
The mission of Kamarau International
School is to provide a high quality international education
in a multicultural, peaceful and caring environment
that fosters the intellectual, physical, social, emotional
and spiritual development of the child through the co-operative
effort of the school, home and general community.
Aims
The school aims to educate all students
and equip them with life skills and knowledge demanded
by the culture in which they live and will be returning
to. We aim to achieve a background in both Papua New
Guinean and Australasian heritage, a respect for the
beliefs and values of other cultural groups and take
advantage of the learning opportunities provided by
the fascinating and diverse culture in Papua New Guinea.
Our involvement in the community
Since the establishment of Kamarau the
community has highly appreciated and continue to rely
on us to educate the public on some issues affecting
our community. Both staff and children have been involved
in giving valuable speeches, presenting meaningful items,
displays and reading educational materials during these
community based celebrations:
- World Aids Day
- Universal Children’s
Day
- First Aid Day-Red Cross
We also have
Easter, Mother’s Day,
Father’s Day and Christmas concerts for people
in our community to learn and enjoy.
